About the critters

Sofa dogs....

Introducing Mr. Bingley, a 2 year old 80 lb goldendoodle.  Bonus points to those of you who can identify the literary reference.  Bingley is just like his name, blond, curly, exuberant, loving and BIG.  He is a sweet dog who is becoming a great dog as he mellows a bit with age.  He is great with the babies thinks he is a lap dog.  Mr. B will be returning to Denver Dog Works with Michele for the 10 days around the surgery.  He spent 8 weeks there during the initial episode and came back a much better trained dog, now if only we could train his owner!

And I must be an overachiever – living with Sarah in New Mexico are  Sebastian, Kirby, Brin and Gabby – in the order in which they chose me.  Sebastian is a white and black fluff ball from Marietta, Georgia.  I think he came about due to me saying something like I’d only get a kitten if it was a long-haired calico.  Thus, there was then an ad in the paper for such things.  He was the last kitten in the litter, looked a bit like a possum – but I took him.  After about 3 days, I decided it wasn’t fair to have an only cat – plus I felt he was crazy.  Total energy and needed a friend, so I started looking for a grey kitten.  Within days I was headed to Newnan, Georgia – Kirby came from a litter of too many, and he was only 6 weeks old when I adopted him.  He’s a bit of a cuddle bug and prefers gourmet food – shrimp, crab.  you get the picture.  With a professional life where I travel quite a bit, I figured I’d always only have cats.  Well…. 2 years ago in November, I was at an art show with my sister, and our friend Cynthia.  It happened to be the Weems show which is held in conjunction with an Albuquerque Animal Humane Society pet adoption.  Right when you walked in the pet area – there was a pen full of puppies.  And this fat brindle one named Edgar.  My grandpa’s name was Edgar – so of course that was fate…right?   Well, I chickened out of puppy ownership that day, but by Monday was calling the Humane Society.  Edgar was still in residence; and he lived with me by that evening.  It was that first week of puppy ownership that I decided I would probably never be able to handle raising a human.  Crate training sucked!  Edgar is now Brin – but for 2 years old is one of the most laid-back dogs I’ve ever experienced.  His special skill is “hiding” in the desert.  Brin runs off leash and will run ahead, crouch down in sand 15 shades lighter than his coat and thinks we can’t see him.  He then attacks when close enough.  Hmmmm…still needs work on that surprise element.  The last addition to my family is Gabby – otherwise known as Gabzilla or just Zilla.  She was found all by her cute puppy self in the desert in Eldorado, NM – right outside of Santa Fe.  She was found by a woman on horseback who tried to find her owners to no avail.  Since she had 4 dogs, she brought Gabby to the Galisteo Rodeo and tried to find her a home.  Sucker!  Got a little black mutt….  5 1/2 months old and a total dirtball, but super sweet – when she wasn’t barking at the horses and calves.  But, of course I had to take her!  I’m not sure she has any special talents other than staying alive by being too cute.  Sebastian and Kirby continue to pray for a fish or a gerbil…..

  1. Okay. You KNOW I’m gonna love this part about the babies. Still love your Brin stories. And I had no idea that he started out as Edgar (that’s pretty cute too).

I do recall you talking about that long-haired calico back in the CHN days.

You have a great family, Sarah! Do you have someone to take care of them while you recoop? And, by the way, what a self-less thing you are doing. You continue to blow my mind.

    • Brin and Gabby will go to Denver Dog Works – so will get to meet and hang out with Lisa’s Bingley. They will stay for 3 weeks of board and train, and I’m SURE will return well trained! My neighbor Marie will watch the cats for the first week, and then my mom will stay with them the last few days that I have to stay in Denver post-surgery. Lucky to have long-time friends like you!
